As mentioned in part one of our study guide series, industry certifications require a significant time commitment. If you’re eager to dive head first into a pile of certificates, but don’t have too many hours to spare, I would suggest starting with the Hootsuite Certification.
Let’s get right into it.
What is Hootsuite?
If you manage the updates for your organization’s social media networks, it’s very likely that you’ve heard of Hootsuite. With the ability to integrate more than 25 social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and LinkedIn, this tool allows you to easily manage multiple platforms from one web-based dashboard. In addition to message scheduling, Hootsuite allows you to track conversations, collaborate with team members, and analyze social media results.
Although a number of similar tools exist, Hootsuite is widely referred to as the most popular social media management tool for people and businesses. The platform has Free, Pro, and Enterprise accounts available.
The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, from general social media knowledge to specifics working with the Hootsuite platform. There is no time limit during the exam, but you must score a 95 percent or higher to pass. I know that seems like a lot to ask, but don’t worry – you can retake the test as many times as you want.
Hootsuite currently offers its social media certification through Hootsuite University, which is included for all Enterprise clients. For other accounts, it’ll cost you $21 per month per user, which is relatively painless compared to some others. The monthly subscription includes your initial training and certification, with ongoing access to their library of courseware videos and Lecture Series presentations.
Hootsuite University provides you with:
- A learn-at-your-own pace course design, including a “Getting Started with Hootsuite” syllabus
- A guided set of study materials, articles and videos, that outline the course
- Course workbook that corresponds with videos
The bulk of the test is made up of questions that you would only know if you watch the videos and/or have actual experience working in the platform. So watch the videos and take detailed notes - they’ll help.
From my experience, actually using the platform always provides the most value. Luckily, I spend the majority of my day on Hootsuite, so I was familiar with the tool going into this test. Play around on a free account before signing up for Hootsuite University. Having that background knowledge will go a long way; trust me.
Taking the Test
Hootsuite says the entire certification should take anywhere from four to nine non-consecutive hours to complete all the video courseware and exams. Because Hootsuite University is accessed with a monthly subscription instead of a one-time fee, the time span can be pretty lenient. I knocked it out in one day, but it depends on your schedule. You will, however, continue to receive a bill each month.
Here’s the best news - this certification, unlike most others, never expires. You’ll be able to forever display your Hootsuite Certification badge on your website and social profiles. On top of that, you’ll be listed in a publicly searchable directory of social media consultants. How cool is that? So pick a weekend and get certified; the end result definitely trumps the amount of time that goes into it.
Good luck and, of course, “Happy Hooting!”
