Bad Names for Teddy Bears

A Sudanese judge has sentenced British teacher Gillian Gibbons to 15 days behind bars, followed by deportation, for inciting religious hatred. Her crime? She allowed her students to name a teddy bear after the prophet Mohammed.

Thank God we don’t live there.

Osama Tape Brings Out the Worst in Media Pundits

We always dread when an Osama bin Laden tape is released. One of the reasons is that, inevitably, our infantile pundits (on the left and the right) find some unseemly way to link this horrible person — who ordered the deaths of thousands of innocent Americans — to their political opponents.

Tucker Carlson had this to say: “I hate to think of Osama bin Laden reclining in his cave in Waziristan, reading the op-ed page of The New York Times. But, clearly, he is. He’s got every talking point. It’s uncanny.”

Chris Matthews, meanwhile, compared Osama to Michael Moore. Moore, in turn, responded on his Web site with a series of Photoshopped images showing Matthews and bin Laden hanging out like best buddies.

Funny.

Not funny ha-ha. Funny sad.

Media Orchard has met the enemy, and he is us.

Update: To illustrate where this rhetorical arms race leads us, here’s Glenn Greenwald comparing George Bush to Saddam Hussein.
