New PR Blogger Plans to Tell the Truth About Climate Change

Media Orchard would like to introduce you to DeSmogBlog, a new blog by James Hoggan, founder of the Canadian PR firm JHA.

DeSmogBlog’s “manifesto” states:

There is a line between public relations and propaganda — or there should be. There is a difference between using your skills, in good faith, to help rescue a battered reputation and using them to twist the truth — to sow confusion and doubt on an issue that is critical to human survival.

And it is infuriating — as a public relations professional — to watch my colleagues use their skills, their training and their considerable intellect to poison the international debate on climate change…

Hoggan added in an e-mail to Media Orchard:

There have been lots of times in the past 20 years when talented PR people have shilled for shady clients, but no case has been more outrageous than the complex, expensive and frighteningly high-quality effort to confuse the public about climate change. I think it’s time somebody outed the PR industry. It’s time someone spelled out exactly what’s being done and by whom. This issue is much too important to leave to scoundrels.

Media Orchard admires Hoggan’s passion. He’s obviously doing this because he cares.

Although the tone of the blog is serious, there are moments of levity, such as the graphic I’ve lifted above. Hoggan’s headline: “Irrefutable Proof of Global Warming.”

If you want my take: global warming is established science, just as evolution is. There is no measurable dissent among scientists on either of these issues; just among politicians — who should get out of the way.
