It&#039;s unfortunate that reporters need to resort to to deceptive tactics, though, because they nourish the perception that journalism is by nature dishonest. I&#039;ve always felt that reporting, as a profession, is as honest or dishonest as police work. Both, at least in theory, represent the public and serve its interest. Both deal largely with the pursuit of facts pursuit of facts. And in that pursuit, both police and reporters deal daily with people who lie. I&#039;ve always held to the idea that news is whatever someone doesn&#039;t want the public to now. It&#039;s a may be a cynical notion, to be sure, but it&#039;s a product of experience. Still, I can&#039;t blame the public for its distrust of the news media. As you know, I&#039;ve written about my former employer, Fox News Channel, for several years. I&#039;ve done so because, in my view, Fox&#039;s unspoken mission from the start was to redefine broadcast/cable news -- to camouflage political bias as fact, and opinion as news. Unfortunately, Fox&#039;s success resulted in just what I had feared it would -- the unabashed descent of the rest of the media into the same cesspool. So now, there&#039;s even less reason to trust journalism. But I think any of your clients who see this as license for them to deceive the public whenever it serves their interests should think again. After all, as you pointed out, most journalists (if not the people who employ them) continue to do an honest job.</description>
