MySpace Passes Yahoo, Google as Top Web Site
From SFGate.com:
MySpace has passed Yahoo’s e-mail site and Google’s search page as the nation’s most trafficked Web site, according to one measurement. The social networking site accounted for more than 4 percent of all Internet traffic for the week ended July 8, according to a survey from the research firm Hitwise.
Before we go any further, it should be noted that Hitwise does not track unique visitors, but rather total visits. Using the more popular unique-visitors metric, MySpace ranks as the seventh-most-popular Internet site, with Yahoo atop the list, according to Nielsen NetRatings. Yahoo put out a statement on the report, calling the results misleading and laying claim to being the Internet’s most visited site.
Whatever you might think of the stats, they do show that MySpace is quickly blowing away the competition in the social networking space. About 80 percent of all traffic to community sites is aimed at MySpace, with FaceBook attracting a paltry 7 percent in second place.
Tip to Yahoo flack: Put a cork in it. Whining does not help your cause.
