Proof That Media Orchard Is No Geek: Second Life Creeps Us Out
![]()
If you don't know what Second Life is yet, we'll let Neville Hobson explain it to you. We signed up but got creeped out and left. This is one fad/trend/meme/phenomenon/revolution we'll be content to watch from the sidelines.

I started to sign up, too, but I couldn't think of a cool-enough name. So I gave up.

It feels like another site where brands will try and crowd out the locals just to sell stuff.
Maybe it’s just me.

I signed up, set my appearance, dressed myself in a tunic that looked like an Oriental rug, and then flew around aimlessly for 15 minutes.
I'll wait for the dumbed-down version.

It is weird, and obviously a little "techy" for now... But, I have been to Second Life several dozen times to watch and learn. It is certainly an usual experience.
I believe the potential of this type of online community is the really fascinating part of Second Life. They have a real monetary system in place, you can actually buy sell and own land, build structures, sell goods, have a meeting with others, or fly around aimlessly wearing a tunic.
I think it would be VERY wise to watch this closely. An online enviroment with this much potential could easily become the next step for the internet. It makes the internet a "place" rather than a "thing" and at a fundamental human level that makes sense.
So Scott, put on that tunic and keep on flying!

I've been on it since 2005, and think there's some cool stuff in there.

I don't doubt it, Jeremy; in fact, I think your blog was the first place I ever saw it mentioned.
