More PR Fun for MySpace

Unless you’re a crisis communications masochist, you don’t want the MySpace account at the moment. Here’s the latest:

SAGINAW, Mich. – Jordanian authorities detained a 16-year-old girl who was traveling to the Middle East to see a man she met on MySpace.com, her family said.

Katherine Lester left Monday to visit a West Bank man whose MySpace account says he is 25, Tuscola County Undersheriff James Jashinske said Friday. On Thursday night, her family received word from U.S. officials that she had been stopped as she arrived in Amman en route to Tel Aviv.

Her mother, Shawn Lester, said Katherine had persuaded her in April to help her get a passport so she could go on a two-week vacation to Canada with a friend’s family.

They drove to a bus station on Sunday, but the family didn’t show up. Shawn Lester said she called them and learned there was no trip and brought her daughter home. The next day, Katherine was gone.

The sheriff’s department contacted the FBI, which was able to trace the teen to a flight from New York to Amman, Jordan, Jashinske said.

Oh don't get me wrong. I still have a problem with networking sites.

Yeah, I think the real story here isn't how bad MySpace is -- but how dopey some parents are.

Since when do US citizens need a passport to travel to Canada?
