Media Relations Tips from the Big Communicator
Our favorite basketball writer, Marc Stein, offers this entertaining list of Shaquille O’Neal’s “Top 10 NBA Finals quotes,” which serve to demonstrate:
1. Why Shaq is beloved unlike, say, Barry Bonds.
2. Why the media took Shaq’s side in his dispute with Kobe Bryant.
3. Why — even when criticizing Shaq for things like, oh, shooting 2-for-16 from the foul line in the 2006 NBA Finals — they do it gently, even affectionately.
So don’t call him the Big Aristotle (after all, this is the guy who thought the Parthenon was a Greek nightclub). But do call him the Big Communicator. He knows exactly what he’s doing on the podium.
