As the cruise line learned in the case of George Smith, it’s difficult to balance the needs of the victim’s family, the authorities, the media, and other passengers in this situation. Minor missteps — like the captain’s premature conclusion that Smith’s apparent death was an accident — were happily converted into conspiracy theories by the likes of Nancy Grace.
