Interview with the Man Behind the "Totally Awesome Guns" Viral

Media Orchard has discovered the next Wes Craven. And his name is Nyk Fry.

OK, maybe we didn't discover him. But we discovered his hugely popular horror-movie spoof video even before Nyk knew someone had posted it on the Web. (Watch it here.)

After we wrote an item about it Saturday, Steve at Adrants did, too -- and now views on Flurl.com have gone through the roof.

Nyk's story sums up why we love the Internet. Nyk made a little commercial for a local gun shop in Salt Lake City. Because his horror-spoof concept pushed the envelope, the gun shop rejected the ad. The shop, according to Nyk, has since closed.

End of story. Nyk figured his ad would never see the light of day -- until now.

Nyk learned about his 15 minutes of Internet fame when we e-mailed him. Here's Nyk's story, from his e-mails to me:

Well, this is a surprise! Strangely enough this ad never aired, yet has been clearly quite a hit! We (Pete, Bethany and myself) are all rather stunned, because the client actually didn't like it enough to use it. Even more strange: The gun store just closed... seems they didn't make many of the the right decisions! I have no idea whether they have even seen the web activity.

It was a very low budget production. I scripted, shot, edited, and composed the music. The actors are friends.

I don't actually know [who posted it on the Web]... I made a few web proofs, and also some as a portfolio piece. I have no idea who has been making it widely available. Based on the great publicity it's been getting I don't have any copyright problems short of someone either making money from it or stealing the concept. Streaming the video is just fine by me! Pass it on...

I imagine this might be a small slice of what the Blair Witch guys felt like when their project took on a life of it's own. I am a musician, studio producer, local TV producer and have been into making music videos the past few years, but nothing this "big", even though the last project was for the band Air Supply's 30th Anniversary DVD (rather different!). Never had a national ad contract that's for sure. Production crew of one. Shot in HD.

So, next? Coke/Chevy/Microsoft? How do I get an agent?!?!?

Forget commercials, Nyk. In a world where Crash wins Best Picture, Hollywood needs you. Good luck!

Oh -- and for those cynics out there who would suggest that Nyk's story sounds too good to be true (after all, how many commercials actually feature the producer's name in big letters as part of the ad?) -- well, all we can say is, it's Dr. Myra's fault.

  • Nyk Fry is a genius. He is one of those rare individuals who has vision and talent backed with a rock solid work ethic amid a beaming aura of inspiration. We have only seen a nucleotide of what he can do out of a human forming chain of code that will comprise his oeuvre.

Those rare few who see this now are witnessing the commencement of a fantastic career. It’s sort of like being in 1972 and bumping into a particular Lucas at the Safeway.

I can say this because I have known and worked with him for ten years. It’s great to see him get noticed in this way. I’m surprised his website isn’t listed here: www.nykfry.com
