How Come Nobody Congratulated the Corpus Christi Caller-Times on Its Scoop?

Politicians aren’t the only ones with egos. Right, David Gregory?

From E&P:

After a week in which her paper drew both praise for breaking the story of Vice President Dick Cheney’s hunting accident, and backhanded insults for being some kind of small-time rag, Corpus Christi Caller-Times Editor Libby Averyt has shot back with a column in which she defended her paper’s reputation and said scooping larger, nationally-known competitors should not surprise anyone.

“While the White House press corps seemed stunned that the Caller-Times broke the story on Dick Cheney’s hunting accident, our local readers expected it,” Averyt declared in her piece that also ran online. “And we were glad to meet their expectations. Frankly, the newsroom had some difficulty understanding what all the hubbub was about last week. As national newscasters asked repeatedly why a local newspaper first reported the story instead of the White House press, we kept asking, ‘Why not?’”…

She then quoted Cheney from his appearance last week on Fox News, in which he said, “It strikes me that the Corpus Christi Caller-Times is just as valid a news outlet as The New York Times is, especially for covering a major story in South Texas.”

Added Averyt, “Breaking what was national news last week was not a fluke for us.”

We know that Cheney’s handling of this incident has been bashed by almost every former White House press secretary, including Republicans Marlin Fitzwater and Ari Fleischer. But for some reason, it still doesn’t bother us. In fact, we’re happy for the poor grunts at the Caller-Times.

Face it, Gregory: you got scooped.

Editor & Publisher, the trade paper, had some very nice words for the Caller-Times and their reporters.

My congrats to the Secret Service for remaining invisible throughout all this. What was the legal basis for turning away the deputy sherrif’s? No one has contacted the Secret Service and asked them the basis for doing this.

    Very nicely done fellas.
