Jon Friedman, media columnist for MarketWatch, offers his “who’s in and who’s out” list for 2006. These entries caught my eye:
Who’s in: Gawker
Who’s out: Page Six
Gawker is wittier, more immediate (on the Internet) and hipper. The New York Post’s Page Six, meanwhile, prints a lot of salacious-sounding stories about a lot of people I’ve never heard of.
Who’s in: Huffington Post
Who’s out: Newsweeklies
Arianna Huffington’s interesting, eight-month-old Web site has got it all — commentary, analysis, controversy — and every morsel is available to readers in real time. At the same time, the newsweeklies are (still) struggling to prove that they’re relevant in the Internet age.
Of course, one could also say that MarketWatch is out; its traffic has declined dramatically since Dow Jones acquired it from CBS last year.
