Pick Your Favorite (and Least Favorite) Web 2.0 Logo

As the Web 2.0 boomlet continues, we’re seeing more and more startups — which means more and more company logos.

Some of these logos are great. Others are remarkably amateurish. In general, they remind me of Web 1.0 logos created without the Web 1.0 budget. And that’s good; it indicates that these companies are focusing their resources on creating real businesses — not buying Super Bowl ads.

Still, a little healthy competition is a good thing.

I’ve posted several logos of Web 2.0 companies. I’d like you to tell me, in comments, which one you like best and/or which one you like least. If you want to go all Rorschach on me and tell me what you think the logo “means,” feel free to do that, too.

Please: don’t be shy. Vote.

OK, I’ll start things off. I love Technorati’s logo; Squidoo’s — not so much.

Update: I’ve belatedly added the Pajamas Media logo to the competition. It actually looks like a radioactive robe to me … but I love those guys, anyway.

Also, at the request of John Zeratsky of Feedburner, I’ve replaced the logo I pulled from their site with a better version.

I’m with you, Scott. I think Technorati’s logo is very nice.

FeedBurner and NewsGator — I’m a “customer” of both — could have done more with their logos. They are missing some flair, no doubt.

    The others are weird.

  2. Daniel Neamu says:

technorati rules, by far. newsgator coming on second.

blogads on the other end of my list.

and more than that i would suggest the 37signals.com series: basecamp, backpack, writeboard, ta-da list (both the logos and the services)

  3. Russell says:

    ooh. Technorati.

blogads. ooh (as in the opposite of the good ooh).

  4. SB says:

Wow … four votes out of four for Technorati.

See, Dave — I do love you. :)

  5. Constantin Basturea says:

BlogHer is not a company :)

  6. SB says:

Thanks, Constantin. I should have said “companies or organizations.”

    Um, you forgot to vote?

  7. moni says:

    best: technorati

    worst: blogads

    Best: Technorati

Worst: I can’t decide between blogads and Pajamas Media

  9. Cathy says:

Technorati and Social Text are my favorites. Least favorite….blogads is horrible.

  10. SB says:

OK, I’ll go ahead and give my two-bit take on each of these logos, since I’ve been asked:

Socialtext: Reminds me of Chinese checkers; too complicated.

AdBrite: Going for old-school toothpaste branding; not memorable enough.

BlogAds: Looks like the company is being held for ransom, and this is the note.

Technorati: Distinctive yet duly corporate interpretation of the talk bubble. Love it. (And we at Idea Grove are partial to black and green.)

Squiddo: Looks like a child’s toy. Too literal an interpretation of the name.

BlogHer: The icon doesn’t say anything.

FeedBurner: My second favorite. I give the nod to Technorati because its icon evokes what the company does, whereas FeedBurner’s only evokes the company name.

NewsGator: Maybe I’m dumb, but I don’t really get the icon. Can someone explain it to me? In general, I would say that arrows pointing downward are not good for business.

Pajamas Media: I love this company, and I want them to be successful. But this logo is

    (1) too literal
    (2) not even pajamas, but a robe
    (3) a radioactive robe, at that

    Sorry, guys.

    Now accepting opposing viewpoints…

  11. John Wagner says:

    Upon further review …

Squidoo is certainly eye-catching, and I see that the squid has a “lens,” which ties into the business, so I give it a thumbs up.

BlogAds is the worst and even the new version you posted is scary.

  12. John Wagner says:

Oh, and as Daniel said earlier, I really like the Backpack logo from 37signals. Simple, clean and easy to understand.

  13. SB says:

Well, looks like Technorati is the unanimous winner. If anyone has a good write-in candidate to suggest (in addition to 37signals), I may hold a second contest later with Technorati as the defending champ.

  14. Brandon Burley says:

    I like Technorati’s logo. I loathe blogads.
