Making the Transition from Journalism to PR
I've started to write what will either be an eBook or a series of blog posts (depending on my time and ambition) on the topic of making a successful switch from professional journalist to PR guru.
My goal is to move beyond the discussions of mechanics and skill sets and to examine the divergent psychologies and cultures of these professions, which can make the transition extremely bumpy -- particularly for those caught unawares.
I learned the hard way myself, so I know.
Anyhoo, I posted this for those of you who have thoughts on the topic you'd like to share. In the true Web 2.0 spirit, I'll then steal them and put them in the book.;)

Looking forward to reading about your experiences and commenting. I went over to The Dark Side in 1994 after stints with the AP and Scripps-Howard and publishing a book about the death penalty. Other than pining for those nifty spiral flip notebooks, I've been happy with my new life. One thing I've noticed, however, is that you never really leave reporting. I still write freelance articles and commentaries, and of course the blog is just another version of the weekly column I used to write more than 10 years ago. Journalism -- the instinct for "story" and the insaciable love affair with the unknown -- is great training for public relations. It just doesn't pay as well :-)

That's interesting, Gary. I realized sometime after I started the blog that I had rediscovered some of the fun I'd had in my earliest days as a journalist.
Unlike you, I never continued with journalism -- even on a weekend, freelance basis -- after I made the switch. So this has been an unexpected treat.
I'll add "The Dark Side" to my list of title possibilities ;)
