Is Anderson Cooper the "New Coke" of Journalism?

Matthew Felling, media director of the Center for Media and Public Affairs in D.C., discusses the dumping of Aaron Brown for Anderson Cooper in a letter to Romenesko’s journalism blog. Writes Felling:

Aaron Brown was not only CNN’s night-time anchor, but the anchor for all of cable news after dark. I mean that literally.

When I took the occasional hot-air balloon ride with the more blustery Sean or Joe, I always knew that at the end of the night I’d make use of “NewsNight” — and more importantly, Aaron Brown’s sense of handling the news — to tether me back to The Real World…

Years ago, Coca-Cola decided to make a switch to a sweeter, lighter version of itself. And, after trying it out, America asked to have the old flavor back. It’s gotten to the point where I have more faith in America’s sweet tooth than their news tastes. I doubt any great constituency will rise to ask for Aaron Brown’s return — at least not any around my age of 32.

Welcome to journalism’s New Coke: Anderson Cooper.

Don’t worry, Matthew. I’m sure within a year or two, Anderson himself will be replaced … by Billy Bush.
