How to Launch a Successful Blog

Media Orchard began as one guy on a laptop in March and is now one of the better-read blogs covering the constellation of the media, public relations and marketing.

We are close to cracking Alexa’s top 100,000, and we have seen our site traffic increase every month. In fact, we doubled in both unique visitors and page views from September to October.

What’s our motivation? I post during mental breaks from cranking out proposals, corporate collateral, news releases and the like. To me, it’s virtual water cooler talk. I don’t do it thinking I’ll be asked to be on CNBC like Steve Rubel (although such things are always nice); I do it because I enjoy it.

The answer is, “It depends.”

For a large corporation considering a Web 2.0 strategy, this is a serious endeavor that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Blogging is a double-edged sword, and its free-flowing nature runs counter to many corporate cultures. The Idea Grove offers consulting services to navigate this new terrain.

For small entrepreneurs and particularly young people, my best advice is: blog about what you love. As for specifics, here are some useful suggestions from Paul Stamatiou, a sophomore at Georgia Tech and founder of TheModWiki.org.
