"For Future Journalists, It’s Cash, Not Causes"
If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a thought-provoking column from Connie Schultz of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that I expect will be handed out to students at journalism schools across the country.
While Connie makes a good case, I do have one nit to pick with her: A career in PR is not necessarily more lucrative than a career in journalism. I have friends — including journalists — who have changed careers to work in communications roles for nonprofits. In most cases, they were earning more as journalists and chose to work for the nonprofit because they believed in the cause.
It’s important to look at each individual’s motivations, rather than to assume that one career is categorically more altruistic than another.
