And the Real Doyen Is.......Phil Gomes!

Business Week's Stephen Baker caused a funny little firestorm in the community of public relations blogs by crowning Micro Persuasion's Steve Rubel the "doyen of PR bloggers."

Now, officially, "doyen" means "senior member" -- but in this case, perhaps the "doyen" title should go to the PR blogger who's kept the faith the longest. The person, in other words, who actually launched the first PR blog.

And that person is Edelman's Phil Gomes. He tracks the timeline here.

If you're new to PR blogging and are interested in seeing how the community has grown and evolved, you'll find this of interest.

We at Media Orchard can't claim to be the "doyen" of anything, by the way. We had to look it up in the dictionary to know what the heck it meant.

You can find more fun "doyen" talk here.

  • Coming up with the a PR blog "doyen" is obviously hard. How about coming up with a PR blog "dork" instead? There are many deserving candidates!

  • Not sure if Phil was posting that to lay claim to the title of doyen. Maybe, to point out that PR blogging was here before some people, and will be here after - and there are others out there that should be recognized.

    At least, that's my take.

  • I agree. I think he was just setting the record straight, and he did that. I guess my point is that Phil would have as legitimate a claim as Steve or anyone else. That's why I think the whole debate is kind of interesting to follow, even if it is a little silly, too.

I know that new PR bloggers are cropping up daily and I think it's important for them to understand where this started and how the major figures in the PR blogging community came to their present status. Mainly, it's been by working hard, and posting consistently, over a long period of time. I respect that because I know it takes a real commitment.
