Reasons Why I Don’t Live in New York, #456: Too Much Drama

You know, and I know, that real estate PR is NOT inherently interesting. Even in New York.

However, because everyone seems to want to have some kind of gossipy, “Sex in the City” lifestyle these days, contrived drama is everywhere.

Check out this post and this post from Curbed, a New York real estate blog, and this blog from PR person Kelly Kreth, who claims she was canned over some of her postings.

Of course, Kelly posts things like this:

Today I had a full day at MotFu and really wanted to quit so many times. The woman I report to is so dominant that I feel I am a little kid who needs permission to piss. I was there till after 7 which is early considering it was the FRIDAY BEFORE LABOR DAY. Nothing is organized and I coudln’t even breath. They are all nice to me because they hate the old publicist so much that even if I were Hitler they’d welcome me.

In the middle of the day I sat dazed, hungry and exhausted, at a lucite conference table and planned the call I’d make to my old CEO begging to come back. I actually did just email him and while not a straight-out plea for return, I did kiss ass and allude to a mental quandry and sadness about leaving. I need comfort. I am made for it. The minute I get uncomfortable I start to cry and panic. I’m not made for complicated things. Really, give me a simple job in a laundromat and I will be ok.

Infringement of freedom of speech — or deserved end to another contrived chic-lit reality drama? You decide.

You sound like a good friend, and I don't doubt that you're right. I think in this case, though, that she made a mistake.

How can you even THINK to use the work "private" in reference to something posted online? It baffles me. Bloggers/diarists/pseudo-authors do not have any rights. This whole "freedom of speech" thing makes me laugh. Because no one is keeping her from speaking. The thing that she (and all of her defenders) need to realize is that freedom of speech doesn't protect you from being ACCOUNTABLE for what you say!

I don't think either Kelly or her employer is handling themselves particularly well in this case. The employer is now threatening to sue Kelly, which only adds another chapter to the drama.And Greg, I agree that "semi-private" is like "semi-pregnant." That's why the distinction between "diary" and "blog" in this instance is rather illusory.

Isn't a diary supposed to be the one place you don't have to give yourself good PR? A diary is where one can list their faults and achievements. My diary chronicles the last four years of my life. I shouldn't have to make it happy just because others are reading. PR is her job. She shouldn't have to take her job home with her.

I'm just amazed that a pr person or publicist or whatever would diarize online about how neurotic she was. I mean really. Maybe I'm being too hard on her because I can't stand the tone of her posts, but shouldn't a pro no better than to put out such a negative vibe? Even "semi-privately" (isn't that like "semi-pregnant") ?

That's fair enough. And frankly it wouldn't be any of my business if she weren't making such a hoo-haw about it now. But having read her diary, I can only say that I hope she finds a job she actually likes. If she does, the firing will have been worth it for her.

I disagree. I despise most of the contrived chic lit drama. But the reality is that Kelly kept her blog on opendiary semi-private and was not actively marketing herself or the blog actively like Stephanie Klein with her Greek Tragedy or Heather, This Fish Hunter etc. Kelly only went public with her blog after getting fired.
