Job Openings at the Idea Grove

For graduating college seniors and others interested in joining the Idea Grove, I'm sorry to say we're not currently hiring. I do hope to bring on a new staff member within the next three to six months. I'll post the opening first on this blog, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, good luck in your job searches. For those just starting their careers, here's some background on the field and some advice on resumes and interviews. And here's a resource for seeking PR jobs in Dallas/Fort Worth.

  • The background info you linked to about careers in PR is excellent. To it, I would add that a degree in business, especially marketing, can serve you well if you are in corporate PR or in a firm with corporate clients. Students with journalism/PR majors should consider adding a minor or double-major in business.

PR types understand their companies (clients) better if they have a basic education in finance, economics, accounting and marketing. Be sure you know the difference between an income statement and a balance sheet!

  • Another great website for those looking for jobs is University at North Texas' journalism school. I would almost say this is the best job site in the North Texas market:

  • I liked the PR tips, although they are mostly generic job search tips -- applicable to any industry.

To them, I'd add that to any interview you should bring at least three but no more than 10 samples of your writing. If you have two samples that you can leave behind, all the better. (They should be clean photocopies that the interviewer can toss later; he or she won't want to be responsible for keeping track of one-of-a-kind samples.)

Also, be prepared to take a writing test and/or prepare a sample press release -- either on the spot or during the evaluation process.

  • Thanks, Joy and Serena. I'm sure young job applicants will be grateful for the advice.
